Lightroom/ DNG Codec: CODEC Issue

I have a codec issue. Little over a year ago, after buying a Win 7 machine and installing my image editing software, I realized I could not view thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Apparently, the Windows 7 codec would not support NEF files at the time. I bought and installed FastPictureViewer and all was well.

In the last 4 months, I've installed PS 5.1 and LR 3.0, then upgraded LR to 4.0. Now, since the LR 4.0 upgrade, I cannot see DNG thumbnails in Explorer. If I uninstall FastPictureViewer and install the Adobe codec, I can see all DNG files, but no NEF files.

I upgraded the FastPictureViewer codec to the newest version, and it will render thumbnails of everything, except for DNG files that have been touched by LR 4.0.

FastPictureViewer suggests "What you need to do is to make sure the DNGs created by LR4 conforms to DNG 1.3 and that the the newly introduced “fast load” option is turned OFF."

Is there a better way out of this mess? I'd be happy installing Adobe's codec and Nikon's codec, if they would co-exist. Will they? Will Microsoft's Camera CODEC work?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have Adobe's for DNG and Microsoft's for NEF. Not that I look at pictures in Explorer a lot... but they both seem to work fine.

Your info is good. I uninstalled FastPictureViewer, then reinstalled it, deselecting DNG as I did so. That covers all but DNG.

I then installed the Adobe codec and I can now view DNG files.
