Lightroom Classic: Closing the main window quits the program. Unusual behaviour?

Lifelong Mac user, lifelong Adobe user.

I'm not sure if I just noticed, if I'm crashing, or if it's a new thing but...

Closing the main window (usually via fumbled shortcuts) closes the program completely. This is not the case in Lightroom CC, or Photoshop, nor is it the case in any other serious Mac app nor has it ever been the case.

Is this right? or am I crashing?

Very, very frustrating

works that way for me (NOT Catalina), but you should still see the dialog confirming whether or not you really want to quit... unless you clicked the "don't show me again" box

I don't recall ever noticing this before one way or the other... and I've worked regularly with Lightroom since v1.4.  However, since you can't do anything at all without the main window open, it seems sort of logical.  I typically just hide or minimize the window if I need it out of the way for some reason.

I believe Mac LR has always behaved this way (at least from LR 4).

But LR isn't alone. The following Apple apps also exit when you close their main window: iPhoto, Photos, iMovie, Contacts, Reminders, Facetime, App Store, Calculator, System Preferences. (There may be others, these were just the ones I tested.)

Perhaps the convention is that if an app only allows for a single main window, then closing that window exits the app. (LR only allows one catalog to be open at a time.)

Lightroom Classic has always worked this way, because it cannot run without a catalog. If you close the main window, you’ll close the catalog and so Lightroom quits. It should indeed ask you to confirm, but perhaps you checked the “Don’t show again” checkbox sometime ago.

It could keep running after closing the current catalog, with just a few menu commands enabled: File > New/Open Catalog, Help, etc. But there wouldn't be much advantage to that, of course.

Yes Catalina, sorry about that.

I didn't realise some Mac apps were doing that now, but then I don't really use those apps.

It does seem sort of logical, but it seems a better option to just offer to re-open the window, or select a different catalogue.

Very PC behaviour.
