In lightroom 3 the clone/heal brush isn't working. When I select it to use the cursor does not change from an arrow to the brush and then when I move the cursor over the photograph to take out a blemish the cursor disappears entirely. I have tried restarting lightroom and restarting my computer. Neither of these worked. I searched online and found a ton of other people with the same problem but no one had a solution. PLEASE HELP!! This is really annoying!!!

Abby, can you please confirm OS and LR version - and in this case, are you using a MacBook Air 11" by any chance?

I think I figured out the problem.. the brush size defaults to zero so it disappears. Silly defaults if you ask me but I am glad it was a simple solution!

That does sound like a silly default! I think it's probably defaulting to the last setting used, from memory.

Constantly losing clone/heal circle. It still works but there's no indication as to the location nor radius of the tool I'm using. Restart fixes issue. It's been around ever since LR has had the tool across several workstations. Mac Pro 2006, 2010, Macbook Pro 2010. Newest system is 6-core 3.33GHz with 24GB Ram, 240GB ssd (catalog/previews) with 3TB seagate as my RAW drive. ATI 4870 card. Happens all the time. LR 4.3RC

>>> This is not a "zero radius" issue. My Magic Mouse swipe up/down changes the radius of the tool and has no impact on the radius showing up. <<<

Same issue here. Had an 15" MBP and just bought a new 27" iMac 3.5 Ghz i7 processor. Not much RAM (standard 8) but got the SSD and it's blazing fast. The Lightroom healing/cloning circle starts off just fine, and after a matter of time, on the same image it disappears. The arrow shows up when moving my trackpad/mouse to either the extreme left or right side, but disappears again when placed over the image.

No one at Adobe wants to address this bug or even admit it exists, for some reason.

I have to say I haven't seen this happen, ever. This post thread only has two others with problems and those posts are years old. How many clone attempts are on the image when it starts acting up?

Happens with no active clone circles

I have this sane problem.  Is there an answer here that I am just not seeing?
