Clipping Mask on Hidden Group Still Being Selected

I'm working on a complex with many layers, groups, clipping masks, and adjustment layers.  For some reason, if I have a layer clipped to a group, the group is not correctly masking the clipped layer.  Visually, the layer is masked out, but if I try to Auto Select (command + click) a lower layer, the clipped layer will be selected instead.

So if I try to select the blue square layer with Auto Select, the orange square layer will be selected instead.  The really messed up part is that even if I hide the group, that orange square layer will STILL get selected.

Normal layers clip and function correctly, but it seems like this is not the case with groups.  Is there a setting that needs to be toggled somewhere?  As it stands, this is a HUGE problem and is seriously affecting my workflow.

I am using the current version of Photoshop CC (2017.1.1) on a Mac running Yosemite.

Hello, why don't you make square converted in smart object ? or draw the shape and add a color fill layer
In your case you have only layers with a collor fill, if you want modify or select the blue one in your case you should select the layer mask.
In this case it's the layer mask who give the shape ;)

Sorry for my english !!! Frenchy inside ! ;)

I appreciate your suggestion but this is only a simplified example to illustrate the problem.

here is the file I am currently working with:

The clipped Grungy Paper texture layer should be masked to only the contents of the text group, but if you try to auto-select anything else, that layer gets selected instead.  This happens even if the Text group is hidden.  I also cannot make the Text group into a smart object because I need to have these layers live and easily editable in the main document.

Unfortunately, there are a number of outstanding bugs related to clipping a layer to a group. They've been documented here and elsewhere, but there's been no mention of a fix.
