I am currently chatting with an Adobe rep. But, I have thousands of files exported from lightroom to my desktop and as of today I am unable to open any of the files.

You carry on chatting then Bernie. If they don't end up answering, come back to us and give us more information. It sounds like an issue with something else on your computer.

Here's the reply from Adobe support:
Bernard, I am sorry, the serial number you have provided is for Lightroom 5, which is a old product  we will not be able to assist with this as we do not have the information that you will solve your issue.

I use Windows 10, save the files to a folder names photos (simple enough) and when I the folder I can view a thumbnail of the print. I just double click and the photo opens or attaches, if I am attaching the photo.

And it's when you're double-clicking to view in Windows that you're getting the error message, right?

Ok, so the good news is it's not a Lightroom issue. The bad news is it's a Windows issue, and we won't be able to help so much with that.

I've just done a quick Google and come up with some other people having the same issue. You may want to try some of their fixes:
