Photoshop: Chisel Hard Bevel Layer Effect Plus Blur Filter Yields Corrupted PSD

While looking into something for a thread over on the Photoshop General Discussion forum, I ended up making an image that looks entirely different at several different Photoshop zoom levels. I saved it and can reproduce the strangeness even in a new Photoshop session...

Note that no texture is selected for the Bevel and Emboss effect.

Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate; everything up to date and otherwise solid and stable. It shows the problem in several different versions of Photoshop, and several others have confirmed seeing the problems as well.

Here's what I did to create this beast:

* New document, transparent, 2400 x 2400 pixels, 16 bits/channel
* Draw circular ellipse path the full size of the document.
* Shrink the path to 70% with Free Transform.
* Stroke the path with a hard brush, medium gray color.
* Layer - Layer Style, Bevel & Emboss, Chisel Hard.
* Filter - Blur - Radial Blur, Spin.

Something's definitely wrong with the Chisel Hard Bevel.

Here's what I see at 3 different zoom levels:

I'm thinking you may have two separate problems here... The creation of invalid data that can be stored in a PSD file, and the interpretation of invalid data into messed-up screen displays. The former should be fixed so it doesn't happen, and the latter should be altered so that it does not forge ahead and try to interpret invalid data in strange ways.

Since this is easily reproducible Adobe should have no problem fixing it.

I'm looking into this and although I can see the effect you're reporting, I'm not seeing any type of image corruption or invalid data. The culprit appears to be Radial Blur, which introduces tiny areas of very slight transparency to the gray circle. You can see these areas in your sample image by placing a bright red layer behind the circle layer, zooming all the way in, and toggling the red layer on and off. The difference is subtle.

These small transparent areas are causing the bevel and emboss style to display as "bumpy." This behavior is as designed, and is not creating invalid or corrupted data. Basically, each small area of transparency makes a "crater" in the bevel.

It also looks like the different appearance at different zoom levels is due to Photoshop having to interpolate the image data as you zoom out. Because of the fine level of detail of all the tiny "craters," this interpolation ends up looking weird. I will go ahead and log a bug against this -- it would be nice to have some more consistency between the views if possible.

Also, I'll go ahead and investigate the Radial Blur behavior further and log a bug against that too. It doesn't seem like it should be introducing those tiny slightly transparent areas.

Let me know if there's anything I'm misunderstanding about your particular issue.

Sounds like you have it exactly right, and thank you for the quick feedback.

I did notice the little slight transparencies (and failure to actually blur the image).

I have to wonder why I ever reported any of the bugs I've found with Photoshop... Not a one so far has been fixed.

Yes, that means what I've described above is still broken in Photoshop CS6, just as written.

Please let me know if you'd like to hire a smart software engineer for some contract cleanup work. I'll be happy to fix your Photoshop bugs if the price is right..
