PHOTOSHOP: Changing tools via keyboard shortcut adds characters to textfields

When changing between tools using keys ie Move Tool (V) or Type Tool (T), sometimes Photoshop adds the characters to an existing text field. It means you have to click another tool then find the text field that you've just typed in (which is not visible until you edit it). This has been a problem since CS4. Pretty appalled you guys haven't fixed it yet. This is super annoying now you have the new esc=save text field functionality.

Changing tools via keys saves so much time BTW. Please don't remove this feature!

Thanks.

Hi Hamish,

Don't worry, there's NO WAY we would remove the shortcuts for Tools. Actually, circa CS6 we added "spring-loaded" shortcuts so that if you click AND HOLD DOWN a shortcut, the tool changes as long as you hold the key down, then changes back when you release.

Other than that, I'm not sure what you're referring to with characters going to existing fields. It sounds like a focus issue or perhaps another app is getting involved, but I've never seen it myself. It sounds like you've been having this problem for a while. Would you mind sharing some steps with me? Which OS are you running on? Version of PS? Other apps running? Kind of mouse or pointing device? Do you also have a tablet connected?

I'd love to help, but need more info.

Thanks,
David

The issue appears to happen randomly, so it's really hard to re-create. It happens maybe 5% of the time. Doesn't sound like much but when you're switching tools about 20 times a minute it gets pretty frustrating.

I'm pretty sure no other apps are getting in the way. It could be a focus issue. It's like Photoshop still thinks I'm typing in a text layer.

This issue has been happening on my home and work computer. CS5-CC and OS X 10.4-10.9.

I've never used a tablet. Just use standard mac hardware.

Typical workflow might be press 'T' to edit text field. Perform edits. Press 'enter' (bottom right key below numerical keys on my standard mac keyboard). Press and hold space bar to scan around document. Press 'V' to move something. Can't toggle Move Tool. Open up text field to find a bunch of 'V's and spaces in my type.

Hi Hamish,

I read all the text reports and you are the only person reporting this, so there's gotta be one more factor involved here. That said, a possible solution would be to press CMD+ to confirm your text. It sounds like there is some sidecar (possibly totally unrelated to Type) grabbing your command. Are you running any screen-capture or video software? Audio editing software?

I'm open to trying to trouble-shoot your system via a web-mediated screen-share. Let me know if you're up for that.

Thanks,
David

Hmm so strange. It must be something to do with my own way of using Photoshop. It happens on my home computer as well. I'm not running any screen-capture or audio editing software. Not sure how you do a screen share (?). I can't re-create the issue this morning which is a bit annoying ironically :-/

Well, if the problem returns, just let me know. I'll send you an email and we can pick a time to have an online meeting. All you need is an internet connection (and a phone line is nice, but not required).

Thanks,
David
