When I select text in Photoshop CS6, then try to change the font size via my keyboard, my text box gets edited instead of the font size box. Please help.

Howdy,

Could you please describe what you're doing more clearly? There are no keyboard-based controls to resize a text box, so I'm thinking your process might need tweeking.

To resize text you've already entered, you need to select the text and then either in the Character Panel or in the Options Bar, change the point size. If you're doing something else, then that's where the problem is coming from.

Now, users can transform text via Edit > Transform or CNTRL/CMD+T but that's a process that takes effect against the entire layer, not against individual streams of text. The transform workflow is merely the photographic paradigm applied to typography; it is not a substitute for resizing text.

Thanks,
David

Here's an image to hopefully make it more clear...

Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is expected behavior, and how the resizing functions if you have specific text selected. You can adjust specific character's style within a text box, or you can adjust the styles over the entire text box. Selecting a specific part of the text will focus Photoshop on that specific selected text and apply changes to just that.

If you want the entire text box to change, either select all of the text (click to edit the text and cmd+a), or just click/select on the text box layer itself in the Layers Panel (which will negate all special selections), then use the type tool options in the options bar to adjust the text's point size.
You can also adjust the point size of the text layer while having another tool (non-type tool) selected if you visit the Character Panel.

So if I highlight the text in the point-size field, I can't type what size I want in it?

Ok, I think you might have misunderstood me. Sorry. The actual text that I have selected changes to the number "18", not the point size 18.

Thanks.

Howdy,

This is sounding like a workflow issue. Perhaps you're having a problem with your keyboard or mouse or the like. I'll follow up with an email; perhaps a quick share of your screen via the Internet will reveal the issue.

Thanks,
David

That would be great. I really love to show you this. I know it's not a workflow issue. I've been using Photoshop since v 2.5.

When can we do it?

Thanks,
Joel

I'm also having a similar (or the same problem).
I have text, I select it, manually type in the font size and nothing happens... This is new since the update yesterday on 9-19-12.

Howdy Chad,

What OS version, PS version, hardware, etc are you running? Are you running any tablets, keyboards, mice, etc which are non-standard? How about companion apps for pointing devices or anything which might take control of keyboard commands?

Thanks,
David

David - thank you for the response. Restart of PS did not take care of the issue, BUT a restart of my machine and PS did solve the issue. Thank you for your time!

Howdy Chad,

Happy to help. The restart of the OS fixing your problem points to an unruly application. If it happens again, please let us know and I'll try to troubleshoot it with you.

Thanks,
David

I'm having pretty much this exact issue, and a reboot doesn't resolve the issue. I can't enter custom type size values; I can only select what's presented in the type size drop-down.

If no text is selected (that is, the type layer doesn't have focus) I CAN enter custom type sizes. But that applies to the entire type layer and I thus can't have different type sizes in a single layer. help.

I'm having the same issue and was wondering if anyone resolved this. I realize this thread is 2 years old so is probably no longer followed. But just in case..did anyone find a fix?

Howdy Mikalaka,

Please tell me about your setup.  What version of Photoshop are you running?  On which version of which operating system?  Do you have any tablet or unusual pointer/mouse/keyboard connected?  How long have you had this problem?

With these other users, the problem turned out to be their setup.  If you're having a similar problem, it's most likely to have a similar cause.

Thanks,
David

I think he means the Dictation (speech recognition) in the system preferences.
