changing fonts worked smoothly in previous versions. Updated to PS CC17 and tried to change the font via the character panel.
BOOM! Photoshop crashed. I tried it multiple times, photoshop froze every time. needed to force quit the application. Any ideas for a work around?

Hi Bruno,

What OS are you running on?  Have you tried trashing your preferences?  Also, how many fonts are on your machine?  Are (m)any from free web sources?  A corrupted font cache MIGHT cause something like this, but it's not likely.  You can check your font caches using these steps: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html

Thanks,
David

Hi Bruno,

I would be willing to bet that you have one or more corrupt or ill-formed fonts causing you this problem.  For what it's worth, the worst offenders are usually fonts that support complex scripts (Arabic, Devanagari, Tamil, Malayalam, etc) but which often do not follow more modern conventions.  When it comes to fonts, you usually get what you pay for.  Many of the fonts you can download for free are hacked up and can trigger serious cache issues...exactly like what you're describing, usually worse on Mac than Windows.

Thanks,
David

In this version are new SVG fonts... do you have any fonts with multiple color in single glyph? (like emoji?)

Emoji and SVG fonts ship with all new versions of Photoshop.  If they were the issue, every user of 18.0 would have this problem.

They also now come first in the list, so any attempt to use text will show them.

Hi Taly,

Are you encountering this bug?  Have you tried the steps I gave Bruno in the first answer to his post?  What version of PS are you running?  On which OS version?

Thanks,
David

I think I deleted a few fonts, after a while the problem was gone.
it might had something to do with another issue I encounterd at that time –> the 'faux bold' settings turned on... highlight the text, right click, turned everything off, just checked the 'none' option

Hi Bruno,

The Faux Bold bug was fixed in an update at least six months ago.  If you are still seeing it, you should update your version of Photoshop.

Thanks,
David
