Lightroom 3.6: catalog images not visible

I import photos from external hard drives and the photographs are visible when the hard drive is connected. The photographs remain visible after the hd is dis-connected, but after a period of time the photographs are not visible and have a question mark which displays " photo is missing" when clicked. They become visible again when the hd is connected. Is this normal ? (I have opted for " never discard 1:1 previews in catalogue settings.)

I assume you're using Lightroom. If so, yes, this is normal. This is indicating/warning the files are offline. Files must be online for some editing processes.

Thanks, Yes, sorry LR 3.6.

I don't want to edit the images, just view them within LR. (The back up catalog is on an internal drive). Are you saying this isn't possible without connecting each hd ?
