Lightroom: Catalog Identifiers

I think that when an image is added to a catalog, the image file should receive a unique identifier allowing a search to return a result showing all the catalog to which the image file has been imported. This would be an awesome functionality.

I often receive catalogs from my editing team and the files can easily become duplicated in the transfer. I think a Finder solution for identifying the parent catalogs would help me tremendously in organizing my data.

Have you considered just using ordinary keywording for this?

Maybe assign keywords like:

catalog_one > catalog_id
catalog_two > catalog_id

when importing photo into catalogs one & two, respectively.

Note: you'd have to write the keywords back out in xmp for visibility outside the current catalog, and I don't know how you are managing changes/xmp if the same photo can be in multiple catalogs, simultaneously, on purpose.

Another option is to write keywords to original (e.g. raw) master (instead of xmp) which would require adherence to a pre-import exiftooling, either of your own devise or via plugin like Ottomanic Importer.

Do let us know what you have in mind, since such a feature as you've requested may be a ways off.
