I recently moved my LR cat and found it to be rather difficult, I think there could be much easier ways of running the catalog, so it could be more portable, I'm having to search for tens of thousands of missing images.. Just putting it out there...

Did you follow these instructions Andrew? http://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-move-lightroom-to-new-computer/  Because if so, you shouldn't be needing to do too much searching (and if you didn't, you might find it quicker to do so now, rather than continuing to hunt down images)

Sorry GeGi, been away. Move a catalog under LR control? I'm not sure I understand the question.

No problem but thanks. In this post http://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-move-lightroom-to-new-computer/ about moving Lr catalogs you said catalogs should be moved under Lr control. Or at least the two responders below think that's what you said. See the two responses below. Perhaps I misunderstood. I was trying to understand how a catalog could be moved under Lr control since moving a catalog, not the original photos, should not be attempted while the catalog is open. Unless there's something I don't know which is highly possible.

Oh ok, so in step 4, I just need to specify "using Windows Explorer/Finder"?

It just sounds to me like you're saying move the catalog inside Lr. Perhaps you only  meant moving files around (images originals) should be done in Lr not moving the catalog itself.

Also Victoria, to avoid this issue "If the drive letter/name has changed, you can change it back using Computer Management (Windows) or Finder (Mac), or you can move on to step 3 and reconnect the individual folders. (When using external drives, Lightroom doesn’t change the drive letters, but Windows often does. This can confuse Lightroom, requiring you to relink missing files on a regular basis. Leaving the drives plugged in to your computer, or always reattaching them in the same order can help avoid the drive letter changing.)"
Give external drives volume names so drive letters no longer come into play. For example if your volume name is myphotos instead of "d\" no matter what computer you plug the drive into (as long as it's not networked) Lr will find the drive.

Which line in the blog post makes you think it sounds like you should move the catalog inside LR? Other than the posts in this thread.

LR still records the drive letter, even if you've named the drive on Windows.

Cat movings are best performed under LR control - and not outside
