Lightroom Classic: Caption/Title Carriage Return Edit issue

Both the title and the Caption are capable of having multi-line entries. But behaviour is different.

When I hit Carriage Return/Enter in the title field, LR commits the text already input.

However, when hit Carriage Return/Enter in the caption field, LR starts a new line. Should the two behaviours not be the same?

If it does, that's new - and very welcome, in my opinion. Hitherto hitting Return in the caption has committed it, which is really annoying if you don't just want a slab of text. I have to say I cannot replicate anything different: Return commits the text in both Title and Caption. What version are you using, Colin? (I'm on LR Classic CC 7.2 on a High Sierra Macbook).

In LR Classic CC 7.2 on a High Sierra, try Alt/Opt Ctrl J

It really shouldn't be so hard (or obscure) to enter carriage returns.

I'm on 7.2 on PC (And CC says it is up to date).

I cannot say if this is new behaviour or not (My feeling is that it is not) but I've certainly noticed it today. I just went back to check and I am not imagining it.

it just seems to me that both fields should have the same behaviour.

I can't confirm the behavior you're seeing, but on Windows you should use Ctrl + Return to enter a line break. That works for both Title and Caption fields.

When you're editing any metadata field in the Metadata panel except via the Large Caption tagset, you enter new lines in the field by typing Opt + Return on Mac and Ctrl + Enter on Windows.  Typing Return / Enter commits the field value.

But in the Large Caption tagset, typing Return / Enter adds a new line.

This behavior hasn't changed in recent versions and has been confirmed by a number of people. If you're seeing something different, first verify which Metadata tagset you're using to edit Caption: Default, Location, Minimal, Quick Describe, or Large Caption:

Hey Colin,

We tried to reproduce this on three different Windows machines and couldn't. Does moving/renaming your preference file fix the issue you're seeing? Here's a great article on how to do that: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

Let us know,
Melissa

Hi Melissa

Thanks for the input.

You are right. Resetting the Preferences did indeed stop this unusual behaviour.

Does seem slightly odd that a bug can be generated from the preferences file

Thanks anyway

Colin
