Can't switch to 8 bit in PSE6

I want to switch to 8 bit for editing a file, because I'm following a tutorial and it seems that I need to in order to have access to all the filters I'll need...but the 8 bit option under (Image>Mode>8 bits per channel) is grayed out.

How do I switch to 8 bit?

I've worked in regular Photoshop at previous jobs, but only have Elements at home. Can I switch to 8 bit in Elements?

Try Image>Mode>RGB Color

Thanks Dan. I checked though and it's already in RGB color. Is there something else I might be missing?

That means your image is already in 8 bits/channel.
Is something not working that should be?

I suggested the above because if your image is bitmap or indexed then the 8 bits/channel will be grayed out as well.
