I'm having trouble adding metadata to some .jpg files. I keep getting sidecar file has a conflict. Even a single keyword addition gets the same message. I'm only using lightroom and the only metadata in the files is what was put there by the camera a nikon d60 ie shot date etc.

This sounds like the same problem I had: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photosh...

But, to be clear, jpg files shouldn't have sidecar files—LR should write directly into the jpg. Are you trying to modify jpgs or raw files?

If jpgs, try opening and saving them in another program. I resaved them in Photoshop and that solved my problem completely (yes, this would re-jpeg them, with an imperceptible loss of quality). Others have reported that changing the metadata with other programs solved this (they didn't report which other program, and it didn't help in my case). I can give you some more advice if you are using Mac, but I'm clueless when it comes to Windows.

If you are really using sidecars, could you delete them and start over?

Thanks for the help. I have no clue how to make or delete side car files. JPGs aren't supposed to have them.I re-saved them in Nikon CaptureNX2 and the files were fixed. I've had a similar problem when saving metadata in Photoshop elements and Lightroom at the same time, but this was different. Thanks again.

The simplest rule for sidecars is don't worry about making them, but if they appear, be sure to not let them get disassociated from the master file (with the same name). If you copy files within Lightroom, it will take care of everything for you. But if you are in a file browser, be careful to keep the two files together.

Yes, resaving them was probably the right thing to do.

Thanks. I did see some extra files when I was using the raw .nef files from my Nikon camera. I didn't realize they were the side car files. Now I convert the raw files into .dng files and I believe they include the meta info in the files itself instead of side car files
