Can't "save as" jpeg in Elements 12

I am making minor edits and saving files as different names. I had used PS Elements 12 for a couple of weeks just fine -- I opened a jpeg file, and I saved it as a jpeg file. All of a sudden, that doesn't work and I haven't changed what I am doing at all. Even if I make NO changes/edits, I can't "save as" a jpeg file. Oddly, if I just "save" under the same name, it works just fine and remains jpeg.

This is what happens: When I "save as" I am choosing the default original jpeg format, so it looks like I am doing it correctly (as before), but afterwards the saved file is under no recognizable format -- it has no extension and cannot be opened with ANY program at all. Please help!!!

Make sure that your document is in 8 bit/channel RGB, CMYK, or Grayscale (the only modes that JPEG supports).

Thanks, Chris - how do I do that? I am very new to photoshop and just learning to use it. Since the files are already jpegs to begin, I'm looking to see how to make sure they remain jpeg as I save, but I don't see a way to check what you mentioned as I save it.

Does it make sense to you that a file can start as a jpeg file nd then somehow would change itself without my making a change as I save it? Or that it worked fine last week and then just stopped working this week? Can you think of how these could happen?

Look at the image mode menu.

Also, did you add layers to the file? JPEG does not support layers.
