What exactly are you doing? XMP is a text file with the Camera Raw edits. It's not your original image, and it's not the image you opened in Photoshop CC.

What Johan said. Open the raw file in Photoshop. The XMP file is just the setting for developing the the raw file it sits next to.

Like JE and JT said, the .xmp file is not the image.  It is what is known as a side car file to the raw file. It contains setting used by Adobe Camera Raw.  If you want to bring the image into PS CC you must open the raw file.  When you have opened in Adobe Camera Raw you can open into PS from the raw module.  Or while in ACR you can save as a tif file and open that in PS.
