I can open tiff and jpg files in Bridge in ACR, but not psd files. can this be fixed?

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Photoshop/Bridge CS6: ACR update 8.4 removes "Open in Camera Raw..." in Bridge.

What version of Bridge are you using?
What OS version are you using?

What happens when you try to open a PSD file in Bridge?

I just checked, and I can open file types jpg, tiff, CR2 in ACR (8.7.1) (from Bridge CS6-v.5.0.2.4), but indeed: not psd files, that will only open in Photoshop CS6 (13.0.6 x64). Would that not be considered normal behaviour?

ACR only works with camera raw files, and very few other file formats (like JPEG and TIFF). And yes, opening a PSD File would open it in Photoshop.

Thank you Les .
osx 10.9.5 / PS6 v13.0. 6.x64
Sorry I don't know if its normal behaviour as i have never tried it before
Ah just checked and i have bridge 5 0 0 399.
I'll look for an update, but really I just want to be able to open a psd in ACR neither Bridge nor PS seem to allow it - doesnt seem to be one of the supported files in preference/file handling/open in ACR. Or maybe i missed something?

ACR isn't for complex documents like PSD files.
ACR is just for Camera RAW files, and opens JPEG and simple TIFF for convenience.

PS should open PSD.
ACR will open other indeed less complex files.
Well... that's my idea anyway.

Question to all ACR-PS-ers out there: is there anyone who can open a PSD in ACR? I wonder.

Sure, ps opens psd. But if i want it in ACR i have to save it as a tiff. I don't thin it can be done but i am curious as to why not?

For as far as I know, this has never been possible. You can send a RAW-file as a tif, or as a psd file (I use 16-bits psd) from Adobe Camera Raw (between Bridge and Photoshop) to Photoshop, but once the file has been saved as a psd, it cannot be opened in ACR again. As Chris said above: a psd is a complex file, which -in my case after some manipulations- may contain numerous layers and layer masks.
If you proceed from Lightroom, you can send to Photoshop as a 16-bit psd, and the result can be saved back into Lightroom, but you will only be able to see, and change the top layer.

This discussion was a while ago, but for anyone reading this now or in the future...you can actually open a .psd file in ACR, just open PS, choose File > "open as...", look up your file and before opening change "open as" to "Camera Raw".

I would like to see a few screenshots of that.1) I don't find any Open as... under Photoshop's File-menu, besides Open as Smart Object.2) When you have browsed to the psd you would like to open in ACR, where would you change "Open as" to "Camera RAW"?

The option to 'Open in camera raw' is in Windows. I don't have a Mac, but the option is elsewhere.
I can open .psd files in ACR. If they have layers, even vector layers (shapes, text) the composite bitmap is opened in my Elements 15 ACR.

Thanks for this reply, Michel. I hope someone on a Mac can show me how. I will have to switch to Elements once my PS CS6 becomes incompatible.
