I have upgrade to the latest version of Lr. The catalog shown is a very old one. Where do I find and use my master catalog?

It should be in the same folder where your old catalog resided.
By default, Pictures/Lightroom.
It should be a file with .lrcat extension with the same file name as your old catalog, but appended with a number.

On my laptop the catalog file no longer works, it's not a big deal since I always copy photos to my main computer. But I had to start with a new blank catalog. On my desk top the last upgrade trashed all my presets and I was only left with the adobe ones. I hate to say this but on1 is looking better and better, the tethering in on1 actually works, unlike Lightroom . Adobe has until April to get a few things right or I will be gone

Joseph, when you say the catalog no longer works, what's up with it?

Trashing preferences also seems fairly unlikely, but having store presets with this catalog checked can make them seem to disappear (because they're still next to a different catalog) or toggling that switch (perhaps by preferences getting corrupted) can do the same.
