Can't append metadata in description if there is existing data. I want to ADD to multiple files. Selecting all images replaces everything, I need to add additional info but keep individual data for each file.

What program are you working in? In Bridge, under Tools, I create a metadata template with JUST the info I want to add to the files. When I choose that template, I'm offered the option to append or replace. I don't use LR for this, but I would guess that if you first create a template, you can then append or replace your metadata with that template for selected files.

Bridge, latest version. That's what I do, If there is any exisitng info in the description (and it's checked in the template) nothing will happen. I get a spinning wheel, but no change. Keywords will append fine but descriptions won't. If there is nothing in the descripton it will populate with the template info.

You're right. I don't get a spinning wheel. I just get nothing at all added to the description. I append keywords all the time, but rarely ever want to alter a description. It should work, though. I should be able to add to it. I've added my "me too."

For LR only, not Bridge. But it also seems to me that this is something that should be native since working with metadata has been an Adobe thing from the start. It's not a terribly expensive app, and anyone who uses LR and has a significant need for putting in a lot of metadata probably should look into it, if LR doesn't cover their needs. So thanks for pointing them to it.

But merely to append metadata through a template needs to be straightforward in Bridge (and LR, if it doesn't work there, either). I can't think of any good reason this doesn't work, apart from the fact that Bridge has been so severely neglected for so long now, they're having a difficult time catching up to this century.
