We would like to know if and when we can take old versions of Photoshop and Lightroom off our computers. It is never clear whether upgrades depend on the former versions of the software at all. We have lots of software still installed.

Each major version is independent. You can remove the old versions.

What's the correct procedure for removing earlier versions of Photoshop? Should I run the uninstaller? I have already upgraded to CS6. Will the CS4 and CS5 uninstallers leave CS6 alone?

Yes run the uninstaller that's provided for the old version. CS6 will be fine.

is that the same for upgrades? I thought that upgrades were dependent on the previous version. I have cs, cs2, cs3, cs4, cs5, and cs6 still installed on my mac and am thinking about a new machine. CS and CS 2 have the white circle with the bar through them.

Yes it is the same for upgrades.
Upgrades depend on your previous version's serial number, not the installed software.

Didnt work for me. I tried to uninstall CS4 and now my CS6 wont run, PS6 asks me to reinstall. NO fun. I had CS4, 5.1 and 6 on my OS 10.6.8. 6 was running aok for months. No wonder people are afraid to remove old PS versions. Guess I'll try a Time Macine backup before reinstalling PS6.

Other people don't have that problem. And I'm not sure what would have been removed from CS4 to cause problems for CS6.
