Can Picasa and Elements share photos (5 questions)?

I've just registered and need to go to bed and (please forgive me) I haven't looked through previous questions but ...

Until recently winning a copy of Elements 8 I have (shock horror) been using Picasa to manipulate my JPGs. To get my photos 'into' Picasa I told Picasa to look for photos on my C:\ drive, which it did.

And, at last, my questions:

1. Picasa (I think) doesn't move photos from their original position on disk but 'points' to them instead. If I import my existing photos into Elements will it also just 'point' to my existing photos or will it want to move them or copy them to its own product folder(s)?

2. Now I have Elements I expect there will be no reason to continue using Picasa, at least once I can do Quick Edits. However, if I do want to use both products from time to time on a single photo: (a) is Elements happy to share? (b) can Elements edit a .jpg or does it first have to make it a .psd? (c) if Elements can only edit a .psd can I convert the Elements-edited photo back to a .jpg; and, at last, (d) will all this messing around do little more than create a degraded and messy photo?
