Lightroom: Can I create a smart collection to find all photos not in a collection?

Of course I mean not in any collection besides this smart collection. I see there are options in a smart collection (Collection and Published Collection), but I have not been able to get these fields to work in any way. Is what I want to do possible?

Define a smart collection where:

"Collection" "doesn't contain" "a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z"

Put any characters you like in that list, if you use, for example, accented characters or punctuation in your collections.

(Don't use punctuation in your Collection names.)

This doesn't really work for me - maybe becuase I mainly use Smart Collections? Does this filter only works with regular Collections?

The "Collection" criterion only examines the names of regular collecitons, not smart collections or published collections.

John, thanks for thhe answer. Great idea. I was at photoshop world and stumped the adobe people on this. I will give it a try.

Can you please consider having an option in Lightroom CC to enable a search of photos that are not in any Collection. In Elements one can "Find" "Items not in any Album". I have searched forums and this is a question that appears more than once. Please consider as this would be very beneficial.

This way cannot use for non-euro-latain environment.
Lr should have function as Maureen said.

Thanks for the swift response, I saw that, but its a Smart Collection, not  a filter. I am familiar with Smart Collections and use them extensively, but I was hoping that there just might be a way of using  one of the Text/Attribute/Metadata criteria to filter a view on a given folder or folders. I am still on LR6, so was hoping that LR-CC/Classic might help with this. Thanks again.

There’s no way to use the Library Filter bar. But you can restrict the results of a smart collection to a particular folder or regular collection:

1. Click on the smart collection.

2. Select all the photos displayed.

3. Click on the folder or regular collection.

At this point, the selected photos are those that are in both the smart collection and the folder/regular collection. You can add those to the Quick Collection or whatever.
