If your photo originated from PS, yes, you need to save your image in PS to file and import it into Lr.

If you photo originates from Lr, then you initiate an Edit-in-Photoshop session. If you save the image in PS, your changes would be automatically reflected in Lr.

I take it from LR to PS, hit save and it goes back to LR automatically. It no longer will take it back to LR after I hit save. It puts it in the folder. How do I get it to save back to LR from PS after I hit save? Thank you

I have sent images to PS from LR for editing, then did a SAVE and only 1 of several ended back in LR. When I used LR 5 and previous versions, they would all return back to LR when doing a SAVE in PS.

Thanks, I will keep an eye out for more specific information in case it still does not work.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

If you use Save As, as opposed to Save, then you'd have to import the resulting file into Lightroom.
