hello,

I have this problem since July 2017.

I pay for Lightroom/Photoshop CC but since July I can't use latest version of CameraRAW because it's crashing my system.

Here are my two threads about this problem:
https://forums.adobe.com/message/9726764#9726764
https://forums.adobe.com/message/9819070#9819070

I was hoping it's temporary problem and it will fix itself, but now there is new version of Lightroom so I want to fully used, and I can't if I downgrade CameraRAW to old version.

Basicaly the problem is that when I open NEF file in Photoshop it uses CameraRAW which crashes. Then after restarting PS it starts without GPU acceleration, but it opens this NEF file. If I reenable GPU acceleration it will crash on NEF file again.

When I downgrade to CameraRAW 9.10.1 everything works.

I tried to update Radeon drivers, not change.

Also Lightroom works, CameraRAW should be same as LR, right? So why it uses some crashing feature of GPU acceleration?

Please confirm (and share here) which version of graphics card drivers you currently have installed vs. the most recent for your card that is available. That will help with ruling the card and driver out and allow us to confirm whether we have an equivalent setup in house to debug with.

Thanks!

hello Eric,

this is strange, but I tried to re-enable GPU acceleration inside CameraRaw and looks like it is enabled there, so GPU acceleration is disabled in Photoshop itself, not in CameraRaw

let me repeat, I have PS with disabled GPU acceleration in PS preferences, I try to open NEF file from Photoshop (not from Lightroom!), CameraRaw dialog opens, in this dialog I click "preferences" and I see:

DirectX: AMD Radeon (TM) R7 370 Series

I can click open and file is loaded in PS

then I go to PS preferences, I click GPU acceleration, it still works

then I close PS and start it again (manually, not from Lightroom)

I click open NEF from PS and it works, acceleration is turned on

so I go to Lightroom, I try to open NEF from LR i PS - and PS crashes

so I exported this specific photo from LR to DNG, I enabled GPU acceleration in PS, restarted it - DNG opens inside PS without problem

to sum it up:
- Photoshop crashes only when file is sent from Lightroom
- it is PS which crashes, LR is still running
- it started in July 2017, so it is not related to latest LR version
- installing old (9.10.1) CameraRAW fixed crashes in the past (not tried it now, because it won't work with new LR)

PS. my preferences in Lightroom, "Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2018", File Format: TIFF, ColorSpace: ProPhoto RGB, Bit Depth: 16, Resolution: 240, Compression: ZIP - if LR sents TIFF to PS - how CameraRaw can crash PS?

Hi Jacek, sorry for the delay.  Thanks for the additional info you provided above.  I understand the various scenarios you described.  As another test, can you please try disabling GPU acceleration in the Camera Raw preferences dialog, then try using Edit in Photoshop feature from Lightroom to see if Ps still crashes?

(The reason ACR is relevant even when using the Edit in Ps feature from Lr, is because that feature internally leverages Ps-hosted ACR to render the document into Ps.  In other words, Lr is not directly sending the TIFF data to Ps.)

Thanks,
Eric

hello Eric,

I updated new version and crash no longer happens,
at least this is what I see now (tested 3 images)

Photoshop CC was updated 4 days ago, and it says:

Wersja programu Adobe Photoshop: 19.0 20171103.r.190 2017/11/03: 1143799  x64

But also Radeon driver was updated just today, now I use 17.11.1, this is probably that:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Radeon-Software-Crimson-ReLive-Edition-17.11.1-Releas...

So now I can open RAW from LR in PS and there is no crash.
Acceleration is enabled in PS preferences.

Hi Jacek, thanks for confirming that the crash no longer happens when using the combination of the latest build of Ps, and the latest Radeon drivers.
