Lightroom 5: Camera disconnects when tethering

On long exposures, like 10 to 30 seconds, LR will looses the camera. If I just remove and put back the USB cable, the camera is found again.

Any ideas?

I tried with 2 cameras (Nikon D700 and Nikon D4) with the same results.

I'm using LR5 with the latest MacOS (OSX 10.8.4)

Must be Nikon-only. Just tested a Canon 7D and a 5DMKII on Win 7 and it works fine.

I also tested the 7D on OSX 10.8.4.

30 Second Exposures are no problem.

I would like Adobe to acknowledge that there is a problem and confirm that they will look into it. How do I get to that?

In order for that to happen we need some confirmation from additional sources. Unfortunately, I do not have Nikon equipment to use in testing or I would try and verify it.

Hopefully some additional Nikon users will chime in.

Yes that would be quite appreciated.

Any Nikon users to test this?

Thanks

Well, I'm a Canon user (5D MkIII), and during a tethered shooting, I often loose the connexion by switching lens for instance... Not exactly same case as yours, but I think tethered shooting needs a big improvement !

it happens with my 5d mk2 but not my 5d mk3.
this only seems to happen on my macbook pro (10.8.4, 2.2ghz I7, 16gb ram) using my 5d mark 2 (firmware 2.1.2). every now and then during a shooting session i get a message that tethering quit.

I get it on my D4 and LR 5 also. Very unstable behaviour. Sometime lots of "teher_nikon.exe" processes being spawned. Seems to be really a SW issue, as Nikon camera Control SW works stable and reliable with the same camera, same computer.

See my other postings for detail

Thank you. I think the problem is clearly confirmed.

I would like to know if Adobe is going to do something about this !!!

Yvon, the Quality Engineering team needs to be able to reproduce the issue first to be able to work on the issue.

Hi PECourtejoie
Thank you for somebody to notice.

If I can assist or help in any way reproducing the problem, I will gladly try things out for you or whatever.

I need this functionality in my everyday studio shootings and therefore I heavily depend on your help getting things working.

Please feel free to give me your instructions.

I completely struggle with the D4 on tethered shooting. To worsen things, I bought the unbelievable expensive WT-5 to tether wirelessly. I experience absolutely the same intermittent problems on both LR 5. The WiFi connection to the computer is stable and from within Windows, the camera is always accessible and connected, but LR keeps reporting connecting and unconnecting and finally hangs.

Most of the time the behaviour is like this:

- LR reports camera connected, everything is ok and ready, LR shows correct and responsive exposure controls
- First shot is taken: immediately reporting the progress bar top left, immediately showing an empty thumbnail in the grid view.
- After a few seconds, tehered toolbar switching to "no camera found" for a while, then reports again "D4 found"
- Thumbnail never gets a picture in, Tethering bar is unresponsive, camera body controls are locked, Display shows "PC"
- after a few minutes, LR presents an error pop up which states "A problem wit h Tethering occurs.
- No use in restarting tehered mode or restarting LR. Only reboot works.

Interestingly in the task manager occasionally one can see more and more processes named "tether_nikon.exe" appear one after each error pop up(?), sometimes not.

When trying to do the same with camera control pro 2, things are stable. But ist is a little inconvienient to set this up each time. (Using Camera Control to transfer to the watched Folder, then autoimport in LR).

When I compare Versions and date of the diver files in LR and camera control pro, I find quite old versions in LR

So I am not really sure it is a HW problem of the camera because a) windows connection is ok, b) WiFi does not use the USB of the camera.

I really do believe it is tether module related as I get a feeling these tether modules are not really a beloved child of the developers. But photographer's, they are!

To close the bridge to the long time exposures: My believe is, that LR anyway loses connection after about 10-30 secs, if it is long exposure or not.

With WT-5 the transmission is quite slow, so the operation of transferring a picture is also quite some seconds.

So for me it seems to be:

"If LR has to communicate during longer periods of time, it will lose connection"

And, yes, of course, there's nothing wrong with my personal firewall ....

This is the solution I found right here on the Adobe site. Wonder why no one is passing this around. Works for Mac and PC.

Trying tethering using LR5 - Canon 7D - MBP. LR5 finds the camera, 7D says busy and nothing works. Using USB from canon. Any ideas?
