The recent update to Camera RAW 9.5 has caused the same problem on two 2011 Macs (both running OS X El Capitan 10.11.3), my early 2011 15" MacBook Pro with 512MB video ram (2.0 Core i7, 8GB ram, and SSD) and my 2011 desktop iMac with similar video specs. Operating any of the sliders (exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, etc) causes very laggy response in the image. When you move a slider, the image goes darker and then shows the newly adjusted image...making it extremely difficult to work quickly or even really tell what the change has done. For instance, if I slide the Whites slider, the dark parts of the image flicker and get darker...and then the image will "settle" in its newly adjusted state. Both computers worked perfectly fine with Camera RAW 9.4 and previous until this latest update. Changing performance preferences hasn't helped either. I found instructions for reverting back to Camera Raw 9.4 in another posting. I have done this and it has fixed the issue. With 9.4 the sliders now function smoothly like they should again. Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be anything I'll miss from 9.5 at the moment, but I'd still like to resolve this without having to buy two new computers at the moment!
