Photoshop: Selecting Text tool crashes

When I push the Text button to insert text in an image, the program crashes and shuts down. Using CS5 Photoshop Extended on Win 7, I7 cpu, 6 gigs Ram. Have used Photoshop since V3 and this version for close to a year without any issue like this. No changes in machine set-up - haven't used text insertion since last auto-update and now it shuts down the program. Of course I lose what I have been working on.

No issues using fonts in any other program such as Corel Draw, Word, etc.

Howdy Gary,

My first guess is that you have either a corrupt font or an issue with the font's preview. Given that the problem has only recently occurred, it would make sense, especially if you recently added fonts and/or software. Here is a Troubleshooting document to lead you through the process of locating and isolating problematic fonts -- http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84.... Steps #2 and #4 are most relevant to your situation.

If this does NOT solve the problem, please feel free to post a comment and we can go from there, ok?

Thanks,
David

This problem has nothing to do with corrupt font. I have not loaded any new font yet I have the exact same problem. As soon as I use the writing tool PS crashes! Also, I have tried on Mac using Snow Leopard OS or the new Lion OS. CS5 needs to be fixed. I have had this problem from day 1. If anyone knows how to fix this problem please let me know.
Thanks,
SR

First, make sure you've installed all the updates for Photoshop.

MacOS also has some bugs that can cause crashes due to bad fonts (including a few that shipped with Lion) or corruption of the OS font cache. And in some cases font management plugins have caused crashes like this.

Did you try the knowledgebase article that David posted? It includes instructions on clearing the OS font cache, and how to isolate corrupt fonts.

And if you have a font management plugin, then you should try disabling it and see if the crashes go away.

If those steps don't help, then we need to see the crash report to tell why your system is crashing.

Howdy Sayon,

Chris is right. If you read through this site, you'll see similar complaints in other threads. What you'll also read is that these problems seem to be tied to either a) specific, newly-updated OS fonts such that swapping those font files can result in elimination of the problem or reproducing it on other OSes which are a different version or b) a corrupt, third-party font that is crippling the user's font cache. The second case is actually much more frequent; you couldn't imagine how many mangled fonts there are out there in everyday use, just waiting to crash on users. Given that you're having this problem with Snow Leopard and Lion, you're most likely in scenario B. The links, above, should be able to guide you to a solution.

Thanks,
David
