When working on a layer with the mask disabled, using Undo will Enable the mask.

Steps to reproduce:
  • Open File
  • Add Layer Mask
  • Invert Layer Mask
  • Disable Layer Mask
  • "\" to turn on mask highlight (blue)
  • Paint (3 strokes with white)

  • Undo (Using Ctr Z)

The mask is Enabled when I "Undo", but it shouldn't. The mask should remained Disabled.

This happens regardless of what tool you're currently using and also when selecting Undo in the Edit menu.
It is occurring on both Windows and Mac computers.
"Enable/Disable Layer Mask" does not have a keyboard shortcut assigned to it.
This does not happen in previous versions of Photoshop (the mask remains disabled).

I can replicate that here with v20.0.3 on Windows 10 1803.  It works correctly in 19.1.7

Yes, masking on/off has been an issue for a long, long time. I really wish that they would take the behavior of vector masks and apply that to raster masks. Hard to understand why they behave so differently and inconsistently. I love how with vector masks, once you've disabled, the only way to re-enable is to shift click. Having a raster mask become active again just because i clicked it drives me nuts dozens of times every day! Like, i just want to select it, not activate it! It's off because i want it off...

This should now be fixed in the Photoshop 20.0.4 release.
Feel free to update Photoshop and let us know if this is resolved for you.

To update Photoshop CC to 20.0.4, click "Update" in the Creative Cloud desktop app next to Photoshop CC.
