Photoshop: Bristle Brush Pen Tilt Problem Upon App Focus Switch

Bristle brushes do not adjust to pen tilt after focus is shifted to another application. That is, the bristle brush engine works perfectly up until Photoshop loses focus, after which it will no longer adjust to the tilt of the pen. The 3D preview, cursor, and stroke appear completely unaffected by tilt. Only solution so far is to restart Photoshop.

Are you saying that tilt doesn't work while Photoshop isn't the active application, or that it doesn't work after you switch to a different application and come back to Photoshop?

Thank you for the reply. It does not work after I switch and then return. Since I made this post I have found out more about this issue:

When returning the focus to Photoshop, if one clicks within their document bounds, with the mouse or pen, the tilt on bristle brushes will not work. However, if the menu bar is clicked with the pen, and only the pen, the tilt will work just fine.

So far it appears that the issue is only triggered when the user returns focus to Photoshop using the mouse, or clicking somewhere in the document to return focus (either with the pen or mouse).

By the way, I am on Windows using CS5 x64 with all the latest updates.

I hope this is not too vague. I will provide any further information and explanation to the best of my abilities.

Thank you.

Which card and driver are you using? One suggestion would be to make sure you have the latest driver directly off the nVidia or AMD/ATI website.

I am using an nVidia GeForce GTX 570. I always keep the drivers up to date--the current version I have installed is 285.38.

My tablet is an Intuos4 with the latest drivers as well.

What happens if after you switch back to Photoshop you lift the pen to remove it from being picked up up the tablet and returning to the tablet proximity? Does that make the tablet pick it back up?

Yes, the tablet picks up the pen just fine after taking it out of range and returning it. Everything works as it should except for the tilt. Even the pressure is shown in the 3D preview just fine as well.

This really has only become a minor inconvenience since discovering it can be worked around by returning with the pen and clicking on the menu bar. Even if I accidentally return by clicking the document or with the mouse, I can click another window and reenter Photoshop properly to get it working again.
