Bridge: Could handle right-click and favorites for files better

If I RIght-Click a folder (Windows 7) I get a menu with a choice "Browse in Adobe Bridge CS6". That's nice, I use that sometimes.

If I right click on a file, I get no such message. That is annoying. It means I have to go to the parent folder, find the folder the file was in, and right click on that. Not neceesarily easy if I have 100's of folders in the parent folder.

On a related note, if I finally do find the folder and browse it in bridge, I can't add that folder to my favorites list easily. I have to go up to parent folder, find the folder I was browsing, and drag that to the favorites. Not very easy for same reasons.

Here is one way to setup right click on a file to show in Bridge

1. Run regedit.exe
2. Navigate to "My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell" and select "shell"
3. Edit > New > Key
4. Name it Show In Bridge
5. Make sure this new key is selected
6. Edit > New > Key (again)
7. Name it command
8. With this key selected, double-click on the (Default) value in the righthand pane.
9. enter: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS6 (64 Bit)\Bridge.exe" "%L"
10. Exit regedit.

Thanks, that worked like a champ! One of my co-workers turned it to a .reg file we can run on other computers as well:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Show in Bridge]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Show in Bridge\Command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Adobe Bridge CS6 (64 Bit)\\Bridge.exe\" \"%L\""

Any similar magic to add a directory to the favorites list?

Well maybe..
It is possible to add the active folder in Bridge to the Favorites panel. If that would help I will do a bit of code for you.
EDIT:
Maybe this isn't what you want as this can be done allready if you right-click anywhere in the Content folder, not on file else the option will not be available.
If you would like the option of adding the folder when files are selected this is no problem.

I think something simple to add active folder to favorites would be great.

If one could right-click in the Content panel to get option that would be fine. However if there are lots of files in the active folder then I don't see how to do it as right-clicking automatically selects closest file to cursor and then the "Add to Favorites" option adds that file to favorites, not the active folder. I was able to get it to work by adding a rating to a file, then setting a filter for that rating so that only one file was visible. Not simple, but perhaps better than popping up a level and searching for folder.

Adding the active folder is possible as it stands now but you must right-click on the background and not have files selected.
This script should add this even when files are selected...

Copy and paste the script into ExtendScript Toolkit
This gets installed with Photoshop and can be found:-
PC: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Utilities
Or you can use any editor but it must be plain text! Do not use Word etc.

To install:-
Start Bridge
PC: Edit - Preferences - Startup Scripts
At the bottom click the "Reveal Button" this will open the folder where the script should be saved.
Close and restart Bridge.
Accept the new script.

To use:- Right-Click anywhere in the Content window and select "Add Folder To Favs"

#target bridge
if( BridgeTalk.appName == "bridge" ) {
folderToFavs = new MenuElement("command", "Add Folder to Favs", "at the end of Thumbnail");
}
folderToFavs.onSelect = function () {
app.favorites.insert(new Thumbnail(app.document.presentationPath));
};

Here is another version that will let you choose a folder to add Favorites ...

#target bridge
if( BridgeTalk.appName == "bridge" ) {
selFolderToFavs = new MenuElement("command", "Add Selected Folder to Favs", "at the end of Thumbnail","sf2");
}
selFolderToFavs.onSelect = function () {
var f = Folder.selectDialog("Please select a Folder to add to favorites");
if(f == null) return;
app.favorites.insert(new Thumbnail(f));
}

Took me a few minutes of browsing to find out the correct extension (.jsx) but with that it works great.

Thanks, Paul, for these timesaving programs!
