Lightroom Classic: Book module - Print shift on left-hand page

I ordered a photo book from Blurb on the beginning of November. The left margin of the left-hand page was inadequate, and its width was 7 mm narrower than the margin on the right-hand page. On the right side of the left-hand page, in turn, was a white strip and it was apparent that on all the left-hand side pages text and images were shifted to the left.

Blurb regretted what happened and they sent a replacement copy. Before it arrived, I had already ordered four new books I had created by copying the project and editing the book slightly. The replacement copy and all four copies of the new book had the same fault, with the left-hand page left margin almost missing.

Finally, after several e-mails and about a month later, Blurb announced that the fault was due to a bug in the Lightroom. Blurb told that they were aware of the bug, and there is no fix for it. The only way to get around it, would be to create a full book from the scratch. If a book was created by copying the project, the problem would be renewed. Since the exact cause of the defect is unknown, I think it is possible that the same defect would be renewed in the new book project. Creating the book took tens of hours, and I wouldn’t like to make a new book, before I am sure that the same fault is not repeated.

I’m confused about the defect of the book, since the preview version in Blurb web site was okay, as well as a pdf version, which I ordered from Blurb. I also have an e-book version (created by Blurb) and it doesn’t have the same defect.

I would be interested to hear if others had the same kind of experiences. Is Adobe / Lightroom aware of this bug and whether it is known to be fixed soon?

I'm using HP ZBook laptop, win10 pro version 1803. Lightroom version was 7.5 at the time the book was created.

Janne,

You mention version 7.5. Have you tried using Lightroom Classic CC 8.1? There were several book issues fixed in this release.

Hi Rikk,

I haven't tried using Lightroom Classic CC 8.1 (though I have installed CC 8.0 after uploading the book to Blurb). The reason I haven't tried CC 8.1 is that there is (according to Blurb technical support) no fix for the bug. Below is a direct quote from Blurb's technicat support message:

"After looking into this issue. The cause of the pages being trimmed is due to a bug in Lightroom which is not exporting the projects correctly. The files are being uploaded from Lightroom are not including the correct bleed. We are aware of this and I'd like you to send your Lightroom book file file to us so we can do some additional troubleshooting. To do that follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you've saved the book. If the document bar across the top of the Book module says “Unsaved Book”, this won’t work. The book should have a name and a slot in the Collections panel.

  2. With that book selected in Collections, go to File > Export as Catalog. The checkbox for “Export negative files” should be checked, but there is no need to include available previews.

  3. Provide a name and location for the exported catalog (i.e. “Book test”) and hit Save.

  4. You should then be able to locate a folder by that name with a .lrcat file and a folder with copies of the images used. Zip up this folder and send it to us via the following link: http://dropbox.yousendit.com/blurb

Once the book is uploaded, please let me know by replying to this email.

We have cancelled the reprint of the book file since it will not fix this problem and processed a refund for the original order, which you should see in 7-10 business days.

After you have sent us the project, you would need to recreate the book in Lightroom since there is not a fix for this problem, and if you were to duplicate the project, the problem would be carried over. "

8.1 has a bunch of book-related bug fixes that 8.0 did not.  I would recommend giving it a try.  We can get one of the engineers to assist in working with Blurb once you make an attempt using 8.1.

Hi Rikk,

Thanks for the advice. I have now uploaded the book to Blurb using Lightroom 8.1. How do we continue here?

Is the problem evident in the book you just uploaded?

You may want to contact Blurb and let them know to hold off on the print fulfillment until they and a Lightroom engineer can confer.

Using Lightroom 8.1 didn't solve the problem. I'm currenntly uploading the book project as catalog to Blurb so they can investigate the problem.
