WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, SINCE UPGRADING TO LION, WE ARE GETTING THIS MESSAGE IN PHOTOSHOP AFTER SCANNING IN A DRAWING TO WORK ON IT. "COULD NOT USE THE CLONE STAMP BECAUSE THE SOURCE DOCUMENT HAS A DIFFERENT BIT DEPTH." WE ARE UNABLE TO MERGE ANOTHER PICTURE INTO THE CURRENT SCANNED PICTURE.

Sounds to me like one of your documents is 16-bit and the other is 8-bit.

Select Image>Mode> and set the bit depths to be the same.
