Lightroom: How do I rename files and prints with sequential numbering prefix/suffix?

I would like to see a few changes in the file numbering features added to Lightroom when version 4 is released. #1 would be the ability to add a sequence before the file name on export. This would allow timelines to be retained in folders other than Lightrooms. #2 would be that all sequences on export be allowed to start with 01, 001,0001 etc. not just a 1. #3 would be that on contact sheets with a printed file name, virtual copies be given a VC-01, VC-02, etc. designation instead of the original file name. This would let clients request the proper variation before doing an actual export.

Currently, your #1 and #2 are already available. You can easily set up a custom filename in the Filename Template Editor under Library>Rename Photos and apply it to images upon export. Just choose Edit from the pull-down in the renaming dialog. Create your naming strategy and save it as a new preset.

Sequence number tokens can be added to the beginning and can start with 1, 01, 001, 0001 and 00001.

And #3 is also already a possibility - there's a Copy Name field in the Metadata panel where you can enter your VC-01 etc.,

and that can then be used on the contact sheet

That would be a case by case individual file action, wouldn't it? That seems to defeat some of the beauty of Lightroom, where several files can be dealt with at once. I will set aside time and dig in deep in the print module to do a contact sheet with a series of files and virtual copies and see if in haste I am missing something.
Thanks though for the metadata panel tip. I will use that before hand for anything important.

They're automatically given a Copy 1, Copy 2, Copy 3 designation as you create them, so as long as you weren't too attached to them being called VC01, you wouldn't need to change anything one by one.

Lightroom needs a way to rename files using custom text plus a 3 digit numerical extension. As it is now, you can create a numerical extension, but it starts as a single digit number (1,2,3 etc.). This causes sorting problems when you export the files as JPGs and add them to a folder or burn them to a CD/DVD. You can sort by date modified, but this doesn't always work when adding the files to CD/DVD. To solve this, it should allow you to start with a 3 digit extension (001, 002, 003, etc.). This would ensure that the files would automatically be in order by filename, which is the default for most programs.

Isn't the token {Sequence # (001)} what you're looking for?
