Lightroom: Better previews management for large catalogs

I’m seeing Lightroom catalog previews files (not smart previews) ballon past ~100GB where performance takes a big hit. While we can limit the Camera RAW and Video caches, and manage smart previews, we don’t have controls for managing regular previews. Even deleting all the 1:1 previews and optimizing the catalog doesn’t bring the file size down significantly. Our only option appears to be to periodicially delete the Previews file manually and let LR create new previews, with the quality settings lowered.

To improve Previews Management I suggest adding the a) ability to Purge standard Previews, b) ability to automatically discard the standard previews after a period of time (just like we have with 1:1 previews), or c) ability to have standard previews downgraded to minimal previews after a period of time.

Checkout this Catalog Settings mockup:

LR struggles with very large catalogs and perhaps this could be a step towards better supporting them.
