In the way that LR Classic makes automatic backups of the catalogue does/should LRCC do the same? Or is it unnecessary due to everything being catalogued in the cloud.

What happens if/when the lrlibrary file/catalogue become corrupted, lost, deleted etc?

I would think about it the other way...

With Lightroom CC, the truth is in the cloud. I liken it to essentially, your catalog is in the cloud and copies of it (backups if you will) exist on every device that syncs to your cloud-based catalog.  In Lightroom CC, I consider the original to be in the cloud and the backup to exist on my desktop/laptop/tablet/phone/. If I ever have a drive fail, device stolen or a lightning strike or a data corruption, logging into my Adobe ID from a new device will pull down the original catalog to the local platform and bring the original picture files with it if you wish.
