Photoshop: Backdrop option in Liquify filter shows the image very blurry?

When the backdrop option is checked, the image shown is very blurry (also on 100% backdrop). When this option is not selected, I can see the image in full resolution, sharp, as it should be.

How come?

I noticed this is not a personal problem, but visible on all laptops of my 30 students, working each with different operation systems and versions of Photoshop.

The backdrop image consumes a large amount of video card memory and to conserve that memory the background is always drawn at 50% of the resolution of the main image that's being worked on in Liquify. We're looking at optimizing this for cards with large amounts of VRAM.
