Lightroom: Automatically write xmp broken

I've selected "Automatically write changes to XMP" in the catalog settings.

The xmp files aren't saved.
Upon exit, Lightroom warns me that LR didn't finished writing the changes. Exiting 10 times warns me 10 times. I figured out that writing occurs ONLY when I save the metadata manually (eg. Ctr.-S)
But then this functionality is broken. I want automatic XMP writing, this means doing by itself, after every change has been made, not manually, after hitting Ctrl-S.

Note: Camera Raw does automatic XMP saving, this way the metadata is backed up along with the cr2 files. When working with Lightroom, the changes made to raw files are stored somewhere, so backing up the raw files does not actually back up the raw conversion changes (it's a lot of work). Reinstalling windows or going to a different computer with the raw files doesn't retain the changes made. This is very wrong. Automatically saving XMP files must be a priority.
