Auto tones consistently over exposes by twice the amount needed. Example - correct exposure is +0.8. Auto takes it to 1.6. With auto, I get white clipping, confirmed by the histogram.

Thanks Chris. Just upgraded to Lightroom 5.3 from 3, which used to work much better as I recall. Run Win7. Screen recently calibrated. Also using new Nikon D-610 which drove me to the upgrade, but it's histograms are ok.

Any ideas appreciated as I open use this feature for relatively unimportant images as a quick way to get in the ballpark for a few finishing touches, though sometimes it is right on coming out of auto. But now I have to adjust the exposure on everything when I use auto.

Same problem. 4.4 was fine, 5.3 RC was fine. Bought 5.3 and auto tone pushes everything up and over exposes. Fuji X-E1. Mac 10.9

Yes! Thank you! it's not just me. I use auto tone as a starting point for most of my images. Have done for years. Auto tone used to be a very accurate and useful part of the process. With 5.3 update it pushes up the exposure to absurd levels. This really slows me down when editing large number of images.
