Photoshop CS6? Auto-Select "padding" around layers makes precise selections difficult

Using the Auto-Select function the select area extents past the layers own canvas. Example: if a layer is 100x100px the select area goes further, to 104104px (It pics the layer on top). This is a huge problem when you're working with interface design! – And was working perfectly fine in CS5,5.

Can you show an example of what you're referring to?

I'm having this issue also. The auto-select function seems to now behave less precise as before. If I have 2 shapes separate by 10-15px, I can't select between them to get a third layer behind them both. It will auto select either of the first two.

I also don't see some precision setting. It's obviously looking at too wide a selection variance from where the cursor clicks. I would think 2px would be enough, but 16px in my case! Not precise at all!

They have both explained the infuriating problem just fine but I will try and explain further.

Create a shape layer on a canvas, a simple square will do. Now using the move tool, with auto select enabled, move the shape layer around.

Now de-select the layer and this time when you go to move it around, click on an area that is just outside the shape layer. You will notice that it still selects the shape layer.

I can see how this feature might be great for my 4 year old who is using big colourful shapes and still getting the hang of the mouse, however for any professional user where we are needing to make precise selections and where we have multiple shape layers quite close to each other, this feature is absolutely infuriating to say the least!!

This problem is also documented here:

OK, the original descriptions could have applied to many things - which is why I asked for clarification. While a description might be clear to someone who knows what it refers to, someone who is approaching it from the outside may need additional details to isolate the actual problem being described.

Chris.

Here is the example. I have 2 blue 100x100px boxes on top of a larger green box. I can see the green box in the 8px space between the blue boxes. It also extends beyond the blue boxes 8px on the right and 8px on the bottom.

With auto-select turned on, I can't select the green box at all. I just keep targeting the blue boxes above. Now, if the green box extended beyond 10px instead of 8px, I can barely target the edge (a 10px buffer from the blue).

BUT, why can't I target the green layer with 8px of visible space here? What is the selection radius set to in CS6? It's obviously greater than CS5 and previous, but I see no way to change the settings anywhere.

Thank you for the clear example. This appears to be a duplicate of a problem we've already been investigating based on previous reports.

I think this issue is the same as the one in the link below, please show your support in that thread, since it has already gathered some traction. Then hopefully we can get this fixed, yay! :)

Big update today and yet this issue is not fixed... WHY????????????????????

FFS this is annoying. It has soured the new features in the update for me. I really don't care for looking at the new features now after seeing that this has not been fixed.
