Lightroom mobile: Auto-import from camera roll on new iPhone re-imports everything

Warning: somewhat lengthy description of a major annoyance here... quite bad in the "user experience" department. Here goes:

I've been using LR Mobile on my iOS devices (3 of them) for some time. I keep my settings to auto-import from camera roll, and this brings in any photos or video taken with the native camera or other camera apps on my iPhone.

Yesterday, I upgraded from iPhone 6S+ to iPhone 7, and set it up by restoring the 6S image from iCloud backup. With LR mobile installed, I signed in to my Adobe account - and LR mobile immediately synced all my existing collections - then started auto-importing everything from the camera roll (over 3000 images which were already imported to LR mobile, synced to the desktop, and then I've deleted from LR mobile synced photos).

It's been auto importing for a day and a half now (it pauses when the phone sleeps) and I still have 2200 images queued in the auto-import process. It's uploading as it auto imports, and will sync to my desktop again, so I'm guessing I'll have an extra 3000 duplicates in my catalog now once this is finished.

I'm really glad I occasionally clean up my iCloud photos, as I deleted all the 2015 and earlier photos a while back to save room in iCloud. I can only imagine if I still had previous years' photos in the camera roll, it would take forever.

Very Annoying!

Wonder if the behaviour would have been the same if the restore was from anl iTunes backup from a computer as iCloud isn't a full back up?

I agree that this is a major issue.  We would like to use Auto input to LRM so that when we are on a shoot, images that we take and import into the camera roll, would automatically be imported into LRM.  That automatic import however must be controlled such as, "just the images shot in the last day".  Most of us have too many images in our camera roll (maybe that' a mistake but we are too lazy to clean up our messes.).
