Photoshop: Auto-blend layers does not give me any results

I focus-stacked 9 images of same subject, load them into PS 2019 as 9 layers, select them all and do auto-blend (stack images option). There is no result however, after the auto-blend job finishes, I still have the 9 layers, nothing has been changed. Blend mode is normal, opacity 100%. Images are RGB, 8-bits. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You should still have all the layers, but Photoshop should have created masks. Which options did you (not) check in the dialog?

It did, but I thought I would get a new layer where the correctly focused parts are merged into one image. No? Blend mode is normal, opacity 100%, there are no other options that I can see. I selected all layers, made all visible, and auto-blended as stack.

No, you will only get a new merged layer if you check the "Content Aware Fill Transparent Areas' option at the bottom of the dialog. If you don't check that, then you'll get masks for each layer so the result is a focus stack, but no merged layer on top.

Thanks, Johan. Of course I had that checked and I thought it was checked by default. I should have thought that it might not be.

I re-ran a set in both 2019 and 2020, and I got the (merged) layer, plus the other layers with masks. It's definitely focus stacked. I'm running Mac Mojave. What OS are you running?
