Arrow keys don't work and all text selected and cannot be deselected on Mac after focus returned to Photoshop via clicking on the application frame

Thanks Jeffrey. I wish it was. It Isn't.

See this screen recording, you'll hear some thudding sounds, that is me hitting my arrow keys trying to move the cursor after double-clicking the text layer to edit it.

I just updated to CC 2015 and tested it directly: the originally reported bug is fixed, the arrow keys will work. BUT what you are experiencing is correct, this still seems to be a small failure. (imo very small failure in relation to the original bug)

If Photoshop is *not* in the foreground and you jump straight into the TextEdit mode by clicking the Icon in the Layers Panel and bringing Photoshop back to the foreground, the arrow keys won't work directly. *But* if you leave the text editing and edit the text again, the arrow keys will work. At least for me, I tested a few scenarios.

This means they will work again without switching application frame off and on again.

The only scenario where the arrow keys won't work are by double-clicking the Text Icon in the Layers Panel, if Photoshop is not in the foreground. If it's in the foreground, it'll work.

I see what you mean, that if I am in another app and 2x-click the text layer in the layer panel while PS is in background you're right, I cannot navigate inside the text layer via the keyboard.

However, I still have the problem the next time I try to 2x-click a text layer now that PS is in front.

I also sometimes have the problem if I 1x-click PS to bring it forward and THEN 2x-click to edit the text.

So for me it is worse than it is for you.

Thanks.

Hi Wes and Timo,

I've investigated what you mentioned, Wes, and you have identified an issue which appears to be Mac-only and which is actually different than both the original issue and the one we just fixed.  It appears to be a workflow bug where focus isn't quite right once PS goes into a modal state for type after gaining focus from another app via mouse-click on the app frame.  I've seen it on 10.10.2 -- if you're seeing it on other OS versions, I would love to add that to the bug report.  I can see how this would be annoying, though I don't think this is a high-traffic situation.  I will go ahead and see about getting this fixed too.

I think this issue should be spun off as the original bugs are resolved at this time.

Thanks,
David

David, I'm on Mac OS 10.10.3.

I am sure I'm one of a small number of users fighting this, but unfortunately for me this is a big part of my work in Photoshop so I get hit by this a lot.

Thanks for trying to get it fixed.

My pleasure.  Hopefully we can get something out there soon.

Please feel free to share any text-related bugs you find; we're trying to really improve this portion of the application!

Thanks,
David

I'm on Mac OS 10.10.5, and Adobe Photoshop Version: 2015.0.1 20150722.r.168 2015/07/22:23:59:59 CL 1032103 x64.

I see this issue daily, hourly, etc., and have now for several years - primarily since moving from PS 6.0 to Creative Cloud. I use PS for screen mock ups and text is used nearly every moment of the day. I can't imagine there are a small number of users who are fighting this - just not enough that complain...

When there is something that is seemingly small that is used over and over, it becomes disruptive to the workflow, and having to recall the correct sequence of workarounds is equally disruptive.

Do you have any sense of when this will be fixed?

We cannot fix a problem that we have never seen and cannot reproduce.
So you need to help us determine why you see this problem when millions of other users are not seeing such a problem.

How can I best help determine why I see this? I've seen the problem on two different mac systems.

Basically, I have a text layer. and I double-click the "T" text layer icon, and press the arrow key - nothing happens. I can't replicate it on-demand. It happens when it happens, and is not predictable. I can make sure the app has focus - meaning I click on the title bar of the window and then click on the "T", and the result is the same. However, on occasion, the arrow keys 'suddenly' work, and I cannot reliably determine why.

Howdy Trent,

First, this bug was only reported in June of this year; it is different than the previous issue, which we've fixed.  This bug has not been lingering for very long at all, actually.

Second, we can reproduce this and there's a bug logged, but it's a fairly low-traffic situation, so it's not high priority.

Third, the steps that you're describing either represent a different bug or there are missing steps.  This bug involves focus not being correctly returned when the app is in a modal state and to do that you need to toggle between apps on OS 10.10 (only) and return via click, so a somewhat specific workflow and setup.

Finally, there is a workaround for now (until we can get a fix out).  Simply use the icon in the Dock to change between applications and the problem will not happen.

I totally understand that this bug is causing you problems and I logged a ticket for it as soon as I could figure out the trigger.  Hopefully we'll have a solution soon.

Thanks,
David

To clarify, the issue I still see is the arrow keys, delete, etc. not working in edit mode, where only the use of the backspace key is possible in text edit mode.
