Photoshop Elements: Additional shapes appear unexpectedly

Very frequently when I'm drawing on Photoshop Elements 8, it will make a line somewhere it's not supposed to. For instance, I'll draw a straight line in the upper left corner of the canvas, and in the middle it will draw a circle. What could be causing this and how do I fix it? I am using a laptop touchpad, and sometimes a pen tablet.

Wow, that would be very strange. While using a touch pad or tablet can some times be the cause of the mouse cursor randomly jumping around the screen, even that should not cause shapes created by different tools to appear.

What tool are you using? The Paint Brush?

If you zoom in on this new shape, does it disappear, or are there color pixels? If there are pixels, are they on the same layer and in the same color as what you were drawing?

Could you post a screen shot?

I'm using the pencil, and there are color pixels. They are also in the same color and on the same layer.

It also happens with eraser and rectangle marquee.

Does the same thing happen with the rectangle marquee? No pixels should be painted with this tool selected.

Have you tried simply resetting the application to default settings (hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift during launch, Command+Option+Shift on Mac, you will be prompted to delete the "preference file" if done correctly)?
