An internal error has occurred: table overflow

This is probably a follow-up my post of 4 months ago:

For some reason my Lightroom database is very slow when it comes to deleting collections. Operations that should take minutes take hours. I have timed certain delete operations--if I export my database as a new database I can speed up delete operations by 60-fold. But I find that after I use the database for a few days, it slows down again. Optimizing the database does not help.

I have had conversations with Adobe technical support staff (thank you), and they say that they have identified certain inefficiencies in the delete code, but that the problem is pretty deeply wired into Lightroom and cannot be fixed with a simple change to the code.

Today I inadvertently created a Smart Collection with no criteria (Create Smart Collection... and Create Collection Set... are but one click apart in the pop-up menu). I tried to delete that Smart Collection and, after Lightroom locked up for 30+ minutes, I got the error "An internal error has occurred: table overflow". My database appears to be consistent, and after the error the Smart Collection seems to have been deleted, so no harm done.

But I suspect that this error is related to the previous problems I have found in Lightroom (I should say "for my database, in Lightroom"), and I think the bug warrants further investigation. I have not tried to replicate this error, but I can if Adobe staff want me to.
