This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Lightroom Classic: Ability to sync Smart Collections with (Lightroom CC / Mobile / lightroom.adobe.com)

Allowing smart collections to exist in the cloud has been the most-voted for feature request in the Lr-forums. So far, it's been blatantly ignored by Adobe. However, I believe it should be much easier to implement now that Adobe has upgraded the Lr-Cloud.

Adobe, please refer to the link below for the most requested idea for Lr in the last 4 years.
Thank you.

Do you want smart collections to sync between LR Classic and LR CC / Mobile, or do you just want smart albums in LR CC / Mobile?

Victoria Bampton (Lightroom Queen) wrote recently, "no new sync functionality will be added to Classic".  She's well-plugged-in to Adobe, so I think that bodes ill for syncing of LR Classic smart collections.

I suppose smart albums in CC would be the same idea as smart collections in Classic. It would be nice to be able to at least copy the smart collections I have now to cloud. But I will recreate them if I must manually.

ANY sync would be apprecisted between Classic, CC, and Web. But not the current sync. Basically right now I cannot use both CC and Classic. If I choose to sync smart files to web from Classic, when I open Classic it will end up downloading the originals of everything i have in CC.

Depressing to hear the news you gave. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Adobe always “says” they listen to their customers, but continue to ignore most idea requests.

Having smart albums in the cloud shouldn't be that difficult, so I fully expect that to come one day.

The requests were for synching smart collections from Lightroom Classic to the cloud however, and that is indeed very complicated. There are many possible conflicts. Just an example: In Lightroom Classic you can create a smart collection that searches for images in folders of a certain name. How would you synch that with a smart album in Lightroom CC on your iPad? Those folders are local folders on your desktop computer, so Lightroom for iPad knows nothing about them and can't search for them...

I'm sure Adobe looked at this because it was requested so often. But I think they decided it would be too messy to try. I think that is a general problem here. People can request all sort of things. They don't have to find out first whether it's possible to do it without rewriting the whole application. And if Adobe doesn't comply, they will say "Adobe never listens to us".

Currently, if my smart previews are already synced to the cloud in Classic, my computer doesn’t need to be turned on to view the images on another device. Since smart collections work off metadata, rather than making another copy of the image file, the smart (and non-smart) collections already function as virtual folders. Therefore all that’s needed is for Classic to link the smart preview already in the cloud into it’s matched online smart album. If an image is in a smart collection in Classic and is not in any other synced album online, then Classic can just sync the missing image the same way it currently matches non-smart collections.

When I turn on my iPad, it calls home and checks for missing images or updates to any synced images in non-smart collections. It could do the exact same for smart collections.

I suppose the greatest frustration is the lack of communication. I understand they can’t reply to every little idea listed in the forums. But If you sort the Lr idea topics by “highest votes” then the link I mentioned comes up as #1. It’s not a small request. The least they could do is acknowledge it and provide a reason to why they think it wouldn’t work. Instead it’s just silence.
