Adobe support tells me that my sd card is incompatible with LR 6.x

Since upgrading to LR 6 I can no longer import directly from any memory card. I have tried 2 different SD cards and a CF card. During import the thumbnails appear and then I get the "Program not Responding" message.
During a chat with Adobe support I was told my cards were incompatible. After reverting to LR 5.7 everything works fine. The incompatible card answer does not sound likely to me.

I agree that seems very unlikely. 

How are you connecting to the computer? And what OS and LR version are you using?

I'm on a PC using Windows 10. The LR version is 2015.7
I have tried the cards in a external card reader and the built-in card slot.

In the import dialog screen, try select the card from the "Files" section instead of the "Devices" section. Would it work?

When selected from "Files" the import works but I have to put the card in after selecting Import and set the option to Copy.
It is a workaround I can use.

Simon, since my last note I am now not able to import any photos, using Files or Devices.
The thumbnails appear but then when I click anywhere in the application I get the "Lightroom not responding" message.  I have up graded to 2015.8 and there is no change. 

I have installed LR 5.7.1 and import works perfectly. I am now importing into LR 5 and then importing that catalog into 2015.8. This is hardly ideal.

What happens if you copy the files to the hard drive using Windows Explorer, then import into Lightroom from the hard drive?

Copying files to the hard drive before importing thru the "other files" option worked once but I can no longer get it to work.
