By the end of the year every major web browser will be supporting (or have plans for supporting) the WebP format. The format is completely open source, so I am not sure why Photoshop is so far behind the curve on this. Please add native support in Photoshop.  The plugin is a crude work-around for what should be built-in to PS.

I suspect that WebP will never get widespread adoption and will be replaced by newer formats. You still need to deliver PNG or JPEG to iOS clients.

I would argue that by the end of the year it will have widespread adoption.  By the end of 2018 85% of web browsers will be capable of using WebP and 70% of mobile browsers (maybe more).  I would consider this widespread and would it allow more websites to start using the format.

I do agree it will be replaced by newer formats, but again the adoption of those formats will take years. In that time we could be using something much better than jpg and png.

Apple is not going to support it and the iOS market is huge. So, no, 85% of web browsers won't support it.
