Today I have downloaded the new release of DNG converter 9.7 to support the Canon 5D Mark IV, but when i attempt to convert the CR2 I get an error "There was an unknown Error" ....no files converted... anyone else experienced this and why is it 100% impossible to actually speak to someone in Adobe ? :-)

This is covered in the camera compatibility documentation here: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/editing-canon-dual-pixel-raw-cr2.html

it actually does not covered... first of all it is an error message, a properly written/tested software shall not allow you even to selected an option to do this with DPRaw and then - if it still allows do not generate "unknown error" and on top of that you still can generate linear DNG raw from DPRaw CR2... situation reminds Panasonic RW2 with optics corrections tags inside , while Adobe was trying to update DNG standard you also were able to generate only linear DNGs :-)... so it seems it is the case again - Adobe trying to patch DNG spec to document halframes, meanwhille like with those RW2 raws you can work only with original raw files or with linear DNGs...
