I used to use Ron Bigelow's edge mask sharpening workflow in PS2, until I upgraded and started using PS6 and bought LR4.3. I soon found out that the Masking feature in the Sharpening window gives a very similar effect to an edge mask developed in PS via the find edges feature. With one important difference. In PS I can paint over the bits I don't want sharpened to prevent them giving noise on edges that show up but aren't sharp enough to bother sharpening. This allows me to leave the parts I DO want sharpened in the mask, and keep them at a high visibility level. In LR4 if I move the masking slider enough to the right to get rid of 'mush', it also gets rid of the detail I want to sharpen. How about an adjustment brush in LR that works on the sharpening mask and allows me to paint over the bits I don't want to sharpen, in black?
